I happened to be on a long business trip the last fortnight and happened to be reading Archer's book on Mallory. I know many people have scant regard for Archer and Mallory's achievements. But this fellow has a way with words and boy, can he tell a story and how! One statement of Mallory that I will always remember from this book is when he wonders why he has to leave his wife to realise how much he loves her. I could relate to that in an instant. I am not sure about others, but that so much describes the torrent of emotions I feel when I set off on a journey.
I am amazed at the amount of travel our circketers do. Fans are so quick to criticise them but people who have travelled would have nothing but sympathy for these poor souls. It would be so much easier if your house could travel with you!
But then travelling is an art. I have been travelling since 1991 and still remember my first trip to Europe. It takes a lot of skill and bloody mindedness to make a success of your travel. I know many friends who remain holed up in hotel rooms and rue their missing families. That's the last thing you would want to do. Get out, and blend with the local atomosphere, live as normal a life as possible and try and stick to you daily routine as you would at home. If you do that you will be amazed at how well you start to enjoy your time in a foreign country..............
to be contd.........
